Lessons Learned from an Illegal

At the gas station, I asked a man, “How’s the coffee? Is it fresh or already old?” He smiled, in a heavy accent said, “Jes” (i.e., Yes). I smiled back, gave a thumbs-up and he replied, “Tank-jou” (i.e., Thank you).
What did I learn from this man who possibly was an illegal alien who couldn’t speak English? A lot!
Since so many rail on illegal aliens, what are some ways we Christians should be more like them?

1. Most live quiet lives not wanting trouble from the government. Likewise, believers are to pray for quiet lives (1 Tim.2:1-4).
2. Most have smiles on the faces, shake their heads in agreement, and say thank you when they don’t understand English. Christians should be known for being gracious towards others (Philippians 4:4-5).
3. Many are hard workers trying to provide for their families. Christians ought to be the hardest workers in any job (Colossians 3:22).

This is not a devotional pro-immigration or anti-immigration. This is a comment on how some who only see the negative can learn even from those they criticize, even if and when, those they criticize are wrong in some respect. Now may those who are wrong in anything see in us a love for our neighbors regardless of their status before Man or God. May I not be illegal in breaking God’s second greatest commandment.
