Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Distractions During the Lord’s Supper

Distractions During Communion
These verses used to scare me:
So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:27)
For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself (1 Corinthians 11:29)
Maybe if I share my journey it might help you.
I wasn’t so spiritual that I thought, “I’m not worthy to take it, so should I?”. No, the “unworthy” scary thought was distractions.
Silence while partaking is more tradition than anything, but silence can be beneficial. But my mind wanders. And then the distraction that really seems “unworthy” – getting the unleavened bread stuck in my teeth! Have I taken the Lord’s supper in an unworthy manner?
Thankfully the passage is not condemning such mundane distractions of a wandering ADD brain, nor the irritation of bread stuck in my teeth.
The passage is about how I treat one another. After all, isn’t that what Jesus’s crucifixion is about from His perspective? He decided to share His blessings with me. We too should share our blessings with one another.
So don’t get frightened by such silly thoughts. This wonderful passage is deeper than the mundane.
