Genesis 3 – The Problem With Comparing

Took my first sip of coffee this morning. Continue reading because this is not about coffee (or did that lose you right there!). It was good. Then I took a bite of breakfast – white chocolate candy with strawberry pieces. Then I took another sip of coffee. Something was wrong. It didn’t taste as good.

The problem was not with the coffee. It was still the same coffee I enjoyed before eating my white chocolate candy bar. The problem was when my taste buds compared it to the candy. I didn’t even compare the two on purpose. However the coffee had lost some of its sweetness from the flavored creamer, brown sugar, and honey. Truthfully, it had not lost any of its sweetness. It just tasted like it had in comparison.

Here is the lesson: Whether it is marriage partners, jobs, children, churches, friends, or even what we are eating; when we compare what we have to others, we often think something is wrong on our side of the fence. They didn’t change, we did. And as the saying goes, “It may be greener on the other side of the fence because their septic tank is broken but you don’t know it.” Stop comparing!

Malachi 2:14 Yet you ask, “For what reason?” Because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have acted treacherously against her, though she was your marriage partner and your wife by covenant.

Genesis 3:6 Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
