A Second Golden Rule

A Second Golden Rule
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12). This is a common phrasing of the Golden Rule. This is another way of phrasing the 2nd Great Command – “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). Both are expressions of the Law and Prophets. That means both are expressions of God revealing Himself.
Let’s compare the two:
1. Do = Love
2. Others = Neighbors
3. Unto You = As Yourself
As we can see, they are simply a rephrasing of one another. What we learn from this comparison is:
1. Love is doing something.
2. Love is doing something for others beyond yourself.
3. Love is doing something for others in response to your already existing self-love.
4. Love is doing something for others in way you want others to love you.
Religion or spirituality is an outward expression of an inward condition. We learn this from God who taught us if you love, you will show it. God loved the world and did something about it (John 3:16).
God wants our love in return. God did unto us as He would have us do unto Him – show love.
