Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

1 Corinthians 16:1-2 – A Church Fish Fry?

A fish fry for mission work was recently advertised. Churches having yard sales, or pumpkin sales around Halloween is common. Is this biblical?
One way to approach is asking if such has biblical authority. Can we find a command, example, or necessary implication from the inspired text. The answer is we can’t.
But let’s go deeper. Such man-made money operations miss the teaching and purpose of free-will giving. Romans 15:23-29 teaches such giving and receiving is a form of spiritual and physical fellowship (v.27). 2 Corinthians 8-9, and especially v.9, show such giving is a reenactment of the gospel. Jesus who was rich became poor so that the poor could become rich. The spiritual exchange found in the gospel is physically found in free-will giving.
This is the difference between biblically based giving and that of the wordly church. The worldly church has good intentions, but ultimately it is about the bottom line. There is a better and higher line.
