Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Self-Control Is Not Control By Self

Self-control is a paradox. We gain self-control by giving up control of self. It’s not control by self, but giving God control over self. We need self-control because we have demonstrated an inability to control self. Self-control is also an irony in that many who don’t have it, try solving their inadequacy by controlling others. Too many enablers allow it and so the “control-freak” never learns they are out of control.

The Bible uses 3 groups of words that can be translated “self-control”. The first has its root in strength. The second is connected to wisdom. The third can be also translated as “sober-minded” because it has its root in being sober (think of how many bad decisions are made due to intoxication!)
Putting this all together helps us understand self-control:

1. Are we making strong decisions, or giving in to our weaknesses?
2. Are we making wise decisions, or doing what is foolish?
3. Are we making unencumbered decisions, or giving in to emotional intoxication?

A.A. recognizes this paradox. Notice the first three steps:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

If you lack self-control, walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5) so you can be strong, wise, and emotionally sober.
