Penance vs Repentance

Penance unintentionally says the cross is not enough. I need to punish myself. Repentance lays all our sins at the cross. Jesus is sufficient. This is where we need a proper response to experiencing guilt and shame when we dishonorably act. Weeping is good as seen with Peter (Mark 14). Weeping doesn’t wash my sins away. When we experience guilt, which we should, we can be tempted to hold on to that shame to punish ourselves. Instead, do these 5 things when you sin:
1. Recall God’s word which defines sin
2. Recognize your sin, don’t excuse it.
3. Remember the path that led to you sinning.
4. Reject Satan, and his temptation to make you feel falsely holy by holding onto your guilt.
5. Repent by relying on Jesus. He is sufficient.
False freedom is found in penance. True freedom is only found in repentance.
