2 Chronicles 10 – Only One Chance

Selfishness, foolishness, pride, harsh words, bad advice, and intimidation.

Hurt, schism, retaliation, and separation.

What am I describing?  Every day those words are more than words with definitions; they are sinful actions with lifetime consequences.  Families, friends, marriages, and churches, all fall apart, never again to heal the wounds of the heart.

Those words came to mind reading 2 Chronicles 10, the beginning of the end of Israel as a united nation.  Civil war replaced civil peace.

Despite the sinful actions, the people presented an opportunity for change, an offer of hope.  They spoke to their king – communication is the key to resolving problems.  They gave Rehoboam a chance.  I wonder if he knew his one chance was his only chance.

Selfishness, foolishness, pride, harsh words, and intimidation followed.

Change is so hard….  It is easier to blame others than to blame ourselves.

Ruined lives, well, that’s life folks.  We are all jerks sometimes.  Loved ones and friends offer a glimmer of hope, a chance.  Do we change?

The chapter concludes, So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.  The chapter ends and so did the nation.  Marriages end, children run away or drift away.  Friendships disintegrate.  Churches split.  Sadly, sometimes all we get is one chance.  What’s scary is not knowing when we will only have just one chance.  What will we do with it?
