Genesis 1-2 – How to Read

What is the book of Genesis? How are we to read it? The key is found in simply reading. Thirteen times Genesis uses the word “toledoth” which is basically a genealogical record. The same word used for Adam, Noah, Isaac, Esau, Ishmael, and so on is used of the earth (Gen.2:4). While genealogical tables do not contain all the facts, they do include facts and are not myths. While they can skip generations since “son” is used both of first and second generations and even further, they are literal and physical generations. The only way we know if a generation is skipped is if we have further evidence within the inspired text. So Genesis 1-2 is to be read as a genealogical table of the earth. Are generations skipped, days not days but eons? Not according to the rest of the inspired record because the Israelites rested on the 7th day because God rested on the 7th day. Genesis is a book of generations.
