Matthew 13:13-16 – Sounds

A sound becomes a noise based upon our connection to that sound. I walked outside and heard leaves gently falling to the ground, making a crinkling sound.   And I thought of God. And thinking of God brought peace.  Then in the distance I heard the sounds of man – motors rumbling down the road.  And I am reminded how often man’s inventions disrupt God’s creations.

Another thought came to mind as I heard God’s sounds – the falling leaves were not in my yard; therefore I did not “hear” work.  I enjoyed the sounds even more.

A baby cries, a mother “hears” less sleep or her own inner need to nurture. What she hears can change night to night.  A visiting grandparent “hears” her own little ones now grown. And she hears a life now long gone.  An older brother hears nothing.  Too often a husband simply hears his wife getting out of bed.

A snoring husband (or wife) is usually an unwelcomed sound, one that keeps us from a “sound sleep.”  And yet how many lonely widows long for such a disturbance?  The sound of silence becomes more deafening.

Our reactions to sounds are more about us than the sound.  That is so true in every day life.  Is it true spiritually?

Matthew 13:13-16 HCSB  For this reason I speak to them in parables, because looking they do not see, and hearing they do not listen or understand. (14)  Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You will listen and listen, yet never understand; and you will look and look, yet never perceive. (15)  For this people’s heart has grown callous; their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn back–and I would cure them. (16)  “But your eyes are blessed because they do see, and your ears because they do hear!

What do we hear when we hear God?
