Triggers

What do we need to do when what “triggers” us leads to sin?

First, WHAT – We need to learn what our “triggers” are so that we can use foresight to stay away from such events.
Second, WHEN – When we find ourselves already being “triggered”, we need to recognize our vulnerability so we can physically and emotionally flee.
Third, HOW – Learning how to strengthen ourselves against such “triggers” is essential. Staying “weak” is not an option. If you are “triggered” by me saying such is a weakness, then your pride is part of the problem!

Since a “trigger” is connected linguistically to a gun trigger, let’s see how that process works: trigger – “device by means of which a catch or spring is released and a mechanism set in action” (etymology online).

From this we learn certain events are like springs that set in motion our reactions, and just like bullets can destroy, so can our behaviors.

One scripture which describes this process via different imagery is written by our Lord’s brother,
“But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.” (CSB’17 James 1:14-15)

This is what do we need to do when what “triggers” us leads to sin. Not learning only leads to spiritual suicide because ultimately we are our own “trigger”.
