Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

The Gospel in 2 Words

The first letter to Timothy is filled with summations of the gospel in either scripture, saying, or song. I’ve challenged my thinking on how to find small, memorable, ways of saying this very big gospel.

Traditionally many have summed up our response to the gospel in 5 words – Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, Baptism. That’s not the plan of salvation, that is our response to Jesus who is the plan of salvation. The gospel in one word is Jesus.

The first challenge is accepting that no small or large saying or song can capture what the entire Bible declares. The second challenge is finding big truths in small ways. The third challenge is making it easy to remember.

I presented the gospel using two words to a group of students at Vol State. Based on their reception, I will now present it to you for your consideration – The Gospel in 2 Words:
  • UNBELIEVER – Life, Death, Death, Death.
  • UNFAITHFUL BELIEVER – Life, Death, Life, Death, Death, Death.
  • FAITHFUL BELIEVERS – Life, Death, Life, Death, Life.
Only one ends in life. Implied in these two words are the following:
  • UNBELIEVER – Physical Life, Spiritual Death, Physical Death, Eternal Death.
  • UNFAITHFUL BELIEVER – Physical Life, Spiritual Death, Spiritual Life, Spiritual Death, Physical Death, Eternal Death.
  • FAITHFUL BELIEVERS – Physical Life, Spiritual Death, Spiritual Life, Physical Death, Eternal Life.
Using Life and Death we have discussed both the physical and the spiritual, sin, salvation, hell, and eternity in God’s presence. This is the gospel in two words – Life and Death.
