Genesis 2-3 – What Do the Serpent and Eve Share in Common?

The snake was not created for Adam’s needs while the woman was. Enter Eve as his helper because God knew Adam needed the strength of a good woman.
While the serpent and woman were created for different purposes, both ended up working together against the good of Adam and themselves.
This scene in Genesis 3 does not mean women are evil as some ancient scholars suggested because creation was “very good”. It does mean neither man or woman helped each other according to their one flesh relationship and complementary roles. She led and failed while he didn’t lead and failed.
When Paul says in 1 Timothy 2 that the woman was deceived but the man was not, that is not an indictment that women are naturally gullible as sometimes suggested. If that was Paul’s point then men naturally have no backbone because Adam was not deceived yet followed. Neither is true. What is true is both failed each other and in their roles.
Going back to Genesis, sadly the serpent and wife served the same role, one neither was given by God. When women don’t help they hurt. When men don’t lead they lose respect. Wives, use your strength to resist leading. Submission carries a lot of force with the right kind of man.
