Galatians 6:1 – Watch Out When Helping Others

Watch Out When Helping Others
What is the sin the restorer is tempted to commit?
• “Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted.” (CSB’17 Galatians 6:1)
In the past I thought it was the same sin being committed by the one overtaken in their sin. That can and does happen, especially if their sin is your weakness. But is that the point of Paul?
Notice what precedes and follows this verse:
• “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” (CSB’17 Galatians 5:26)
• “For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” (CSB’17 Galatians 6:3)
The danger for the restorer is in the fruit of the Spirit becoming rotten:
1. Can seeking the best for others become controlling?
2. Can joy become soured so that you shunned them?
3. Can patience lead to giving up?
Consider again certain works of the flesh:
• “hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions,” (CSB’17 Galatians 5:20)
Can you see how someone who is spiritual can fall into these sins when trying to restore another brother or sister? If not, maybe you should examine yourself to see where and when you have been tempted. Again, if not, maybe you have not tried enough to help restore those overcome. Any sin is possible when helping others, just remember that Satan tempts our good fruit to turn rotten.
