Galatians 5:4 – You Have Fallen From Grace

“You have fallen from grace” (Galatians 5:4). Paul wrote that simple statement although many good-hearted religious folks will say the exact opposite, “You cannot fall from grace.” It is a reality, but do we grasp the immediate meaning? Paul is not writing about people who give up and go back to the world. Yes, they to have fallen from grace, but that is not the immediate interpretation but a apt application. Falling from grace is trying to be saved by Law. Whether this is the Old Law or New Law, we can’t be saved by perfectly keeping it. Saved by grace is not contrary to obedience because Paul also says, “You were running well. Who prevented you have obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:7). Grace means obedience, and grace means salvation without perfect obedience. Be “religious” in obeying the truth, but don’t be “religious” to where you fall from grace. Yes, too much emphasis on what we do, being too religious in the wrong way, is falling from grace.
