They Did It Wrong, So We Know What Is Right
I’ve concluded that (almost) everything first century churches did, they messed up. Oh, they did much good, especially in evangelism (1 Thessalonians). However, I think it is safe to say we often know what churches were supposed to do right because they got corrected when they did it wrong.
Let’s test this theory:
1. Helping needy saints? Acts 6
2. Having elders? 1 Tim.5
3. Praying? 1 Cor.14
4. Pure doctrine? Revelation 2,3
5. Preaching/Teaching? 1 Tim.1,6
6. Church discipline? 1 Cor.5
7. Lord’s supper? 1 Cor.11
8. Contribution? 2 Cor.8
9. Leadership? 1 Tim.2
10. Singing? 1 Cor.14
11. Unity? Ephesians 4
12. Treating everyone equally? James 2
If you can’t find where the first churches messed something up, there is a good chance they weren’t doing it or weren’t supposed to!
