Mark 11:20-25 – A Colorful Coversation

A Colorful Conversation

Once upon a time (to protect the innocent and guilty), I was some place I belonged, but new, so the neighbor didn’t know it was OK. More accurately his dogs did not think it was OK. His dogs barked, alarming him, so he stood outside in his yard watching me. There was only one thing to do….so I did it.

I walked over and introduced myself.

This introduction, which included me being a preacher, turned into a history lesson of why this ole country boy stopped going to church for decades…and apparently had no intention of returning.

This husband and wife were filled with kindness in their hearts to adopt a child of a different race. Actually, the child was of a mixed race, but different enough from the people in his church.

To his face they talked of his kind heart. Behind his back, they said, “How could he.”.

He never went back.

For those in our congregation, this passage should still be easily recalled from Sunday night’s sermon – “He was teaching them: “Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for ALL NATIONS? But you have made it a den of thieves!”” (CSB’17 Mark 11:17)

While my sermon was not about this incident, if you would like to hear it, you too can answer the question, “Am I a house of prayer, or a den of thieves?” (The lesson begins at the 15:15 mark). In it, Jesus doesn’t protect the innocent, and you can reflect on your own guilt, self-reflecting on which mountains you need God’s help to throw away into the sea.
