Mark 1:1-5 – Clean-up Crew

John operated a clean-up crew. His job was to make sure the roads were clear of any rubble. Sometimes he even had to knock things down or build a new road. It was hard work and dangerous. So much so, John lost his life working on the road.

“John” is John the Baptist who “prepared the way” for Jesus (Mark 1:2; Isaiah 40:3). Isaiah’s language quoted by Mark historically and culturally referred to someone tasked with literally and physically preparing the journey’s way for a nobleman or master. So by his preaching, John literally and spiritually prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus Himself is called The Way (John 14:6) and His movement assumed His name The Way (Acts 9:2).

Although Jesus a already came, lived, died, and was resurrected; today we are still tasked with the role of John. Just as John prepared the way for Jesus’ 1st coming; Christians today prepare the way for Jesus’ 2nd coming. The clearing and cleaning is not only evangelism but personal. Even the messages are remarkably similar: repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Mark 1:4; Acts 2:38). Be like John. Don’t get out of the way, get in The Way. Prepare the way for the coming King.
