How Atheists Become Part of Jesus’s Story
Atheists derive great joy out of mocking the Jesus narrative. I would go so far as to say their mocking is blasphemous, such as saying “god raped a 14 year old girl” when Mary miraculously conceived. Such mocking makes me sad and mad. Here however is the glory – with every derisive comment, while not purposely yet unmistakeningly, they become part of the Jesus narrative. How?
1. One thief crucified beside Jesus also jeered at Jesus. Then, possibly because of how Jesus behaved, he regretted his comments and then confessed his Lord (Matthew 27:44; Luke 23 40-43). I can’t imagine the pain of a crucifixion; but I have read that even the crucified insult those standing at their feet hurling insults at them. Why? Hurt people hurt people. Get in a discussion with an atheist and you will experience their hurt. Don’t return like for like.
2. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that the Jesus narrative concerning the crucifixion was foolishness to Gentiles. Our word “moron” comes from this Greek word. Modern day atheists are part of the old story. What they consider stupid was purposely planned by God so that the one who boasts will boast in the Lord and not their own wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:31). The fact no one would make up a story like Jesus’s is evidence that no one made up the story about Jesus!
3. When Paul preached the resurrection to the Athenian philosophers, some believed but most ridiculed the idea (Acts 17:32). Modern unbelievers also ridicule life coming from death. Yet they believe life originally came from non-life over billions of light years ago. So I ask why it is so difficult then to believe in the resurrection?
These are three ways atheists make themselves part of Jesus’s narrative. Despite their desire to escape what they consider ridiculous; they can’t help but to find themselves via proxy right there in the Bible. If you are an atheist, remember the thief on the cross. Jesus forgives because you are already part of His story.
