Honoring All the Commandments

Honoring All the Commands
Honoring parents is such a central morality; it is at the center of the 10 Commandments – #5. It is often stated #1-4 are theocentric; and 5-10 are anthropocentric. Truth is learning to honor our parents teach us to honor others, including God. Also, with honor as the central commandment, one wonders if God is saying honor itself is the foundation of each commandment.
1. By worshipping only the true God is honoring God.
2. Not making inferior images of God through which to worship is honoring God.
3. Not using God’s name in a dishonorable vain way is honoring his name.
4. Keeping holy the Sabbath so as to worship and remember is honoring God.
And then 6-10 are dishonorable actions against those in God’s image – murdering, adultery, stealing, lying, lusting or coveting their belongings and wife.
Consider Absalom’s actions against David (2 Samuel 14-18). Did he honor his father? Read the story. Can you see how this led to murder, stealing, lying, coveting David’s things and “wives” (or concubines)? It all hangs on honoring or dishonoring which led to shame.
I’m wondering if honor is this central point because it – and its counterpart shame – is the foundation in all the commands.
