Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Fall is Dying

In the last 6 months I have been to 7 funerals. Death is the enemy (1 Cor.15). And yet….

Consider Autumn, commonly called “Fall”. The changing leaves are beautiful. And yet….

Leaves changing color are “dying”. They fall, which is a euphemism for death. In their death there is beauty; except when the leaves just turn brown and fall off without any coloring.

How does this apply to us if death is the enemy? How can our death be beautiful or ugly? When we die in the Lord, there is triumph. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord” (Revelation 14:13).

Leaves that just turn brown and fall off are missing something. In their changing there is no “announcement” of beautiful change through colors. When I die, if Jesus does not return first, I want beauty in my death. I want to announce my faith and confidence in Jesus. I want all to know that this “changing” is not the final change. Those leaves that fall come from a tree that now appears dead, leafless. There is a rebirth in the Spring. There is another change coming.

“Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.” (CSB’17 1 Corinthians 15:51-52)
