Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Built-in Obsolescence

Two women were having a discussion about cooking roast. My contribution was staying silent. But my mind got fascinated with one offhand comment that shows how different our world today is: “Our pressure cooker lasted about 50 years. It was given to us as a wedding present.” Less significant to me is how things today are not made to last. Built-in obsolescence is common. How many wedding gifts today will still function in 50 years? More significant is giving a wedding present that will last 50 years expecting the marriage will outlast the gift! Too many marriages today also have “built-in obsolescence”. No longer “till death us do part”. Instead it’s “till we grow apart.” Jesus said, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”” (CSB’17 Matthew 19:6). This was said about marriage in the beginning and should be built-in at the beginning of every marriage.
