Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Psalm 1:1 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

(NASB) How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

(HCSB) How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path of sinners or join a group of mockers!

(ESV) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

There is a progression of action that is poetically seen within the translations of both the NASB and the ESV that comes from a literal translation: walk, stand, sit. This is a great verse to show the gradual effect of sin in our lives. The HCSB gives a contemporary interpretation but misses the progressive action.

On a plus side for the HCSB, “happy” is a very accurate, but newer way to translate what is usually rendered “blessed.”
