Silent and Listen – Same Letters!

A friend pointed out that the words “listen” and “silent” have the same letters. That spelling coincidence is not useless trivia. Sometimes people are silent but don’t listen. Other times people are not silent and you can tell did not listen.

“The one who gives an answer before he listens — this is foolishness and disgrace for him.” (CSB’17 Proverbs 18:13)

“The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.” (CSB’17 Proverbs 18:17)

Jesus often said, “He who has ears to hear, let him listen”. That implies some have ears not to hear. Makes me wonder if their ears are for talking, not hearing. They are waiting to hear a pause to jump into the conversation, but you can tell they haven’t been listening. Being silent for them isn’t to listen, it is an opportunity to interrupt, go off topic, accuse, show-off, and such. How many times have we all said, “That’s not what I said”, or, “You missed my entire point”?!

So remember, the words “silent” and “listen” have the same letters.
