Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Judges 2:12 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Judges 2:12 NASB  and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the LORD to anger.

Judges 2:12 HCSB  and abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They infuriated the LORD,

Judges 2:12 ESV  And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger.

One of the claims of the HCSB is that it has fewer English words than many of the mainline translations which puts it closer to the actual number of words used in the Hebrew and Greek testaments. Judges 2.12 has one Hebrew word translated “infuriated” in the HCSB. The NASB and ESV are wordier – “provoked…to anger.”
