Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Jeremiah 13:1 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Jeremiah 13:1 NASB  Thus the LORD said to me, “Go and buy yourself a linen waistband and put it around your waist, but do not put it in water.”

Jeremiah 13:1 HCSB This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and buy yourself a linen undergarment and put it on, but do not put it in water.”

Jeremiah 13:1 ESV  Thus says the LORD to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.”

These are three very different translations by these three versions. The NET Bible says, “shorts.” According to the Hebrew, the word itself has different meanings. The BDB suggests that the very first meaning is exactly what the HCSB suggests, “the innermost piece of clothing.” However, with the emphasis in the text that this garment “clings to one’s waist” (13.11 HCSB), a waistband or belt seems to be the idea. I know this, reading about underwear, putting it on and taking it off, will get far more chuckles from the children, than would a waistband or belt.
