Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

1 Samuel 15:32 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

1 Samuel 15:32 NASB  Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag, the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

1 Samuel 15:32 HCSB  Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of Amalek.” Agag came to him trembling, for he thought, “Certainly the bitterness of death has come.”

1 Samuel 15:32 ESV  Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

I have no comment on whether the HCSB or the NASB and EVS is correct. I just find it striking that they are so different. The reason is the uncertainty of the Hebrew. The LXX is closer to the HCSB than the other two. The question is, do you think that Agag would be coming to Samuel confidently or fearfully?
