Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

1 Kings 14:10 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

1 Kings 14:10 NASB  therefore behold, I am bringing calamity on the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every male person, both bond and free in Israel, and I will make a clean sweep of the house of Jeroboam, as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone.

1 Kings 14:10 HCSB Because of all this, I am about to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam:  I will eliminate all of Jeroboam’s males,  both slave and free, in Israel;  I will sweep away the house of Jeroboam  as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone!

1 Kings 14:10 ESV  therefore behold, I will bring harm upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every male, both bond and free in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns up dung until it is all gone.

While “sweep away” (NASB; HCSB) is poetic and the common wording among older translations, the ESV here is more literal – “burn up.” Considering this is what is done with dung, and how it is eradicated, the literal reading is best. “Cut off” (NASB; ESV) is also more literal than “eliminate.” And considering the dung reference, better.
