God’s Order for Building a Family

God’s preferred, created, family order – shown in Genesis 1-3 – is a process that gives a better opportunity to be spiritually enriched. And because God’s ways are for our good , it helps people out of emotional and economical poverty.
That last reason – economic stability – is not a “higher order” or prime moral reason; nor is it a promise or guarantee. It does suggest, however, that God is not trying to “ruin the fun” for mankind; but rather cares for our good. Check the stats: people who fail to follow God’s process generally have trouble from not waiting or preparing.
What is this process that is seen in the beginning? It comes from how the story is told in Genesis 1-3.
1. GENESIS 1:26-27 – Two people view each other as equals in God’s sight; and serve under God’s authority. Together they share the image of God.
2. GENESIS 2:21-24 – Two people then view each other as husband and wife. Together they share one flesh.
3. GENESIS 3:20 – Two people who have shared their flesh, will become father and mother. Their child now shares their image and God’s.
What’s the process?
1. GOD FIRST
2. MARRIAGE SECOND
3. CHILDREN THIRD
If we wanted to get more detailed, we could add a couple of steps in between. In Genesis 2 God gave Adam a “job” in the garden. Before men get married and have children, they need to be able to support themselves and a family.
Then a fifth is sexual purity before marriage, which doesn’t happen until after marriage (Genesis2,4):
1. GOD FIRST
2. JOB SECOND
3. MARRIAGE THIRD
4. SEX FOURTH
5. CHILDREN FIFTH
Today’s society often turns this process on its head:
1. Children are having children.
2. Baby mommas and baby daddies might or might not get married. If they don’t, it’s because they shared flesh but not spiritual oneness, or because he doesn’t have a job to support a family.
3. God and His ways are an afterthought.
None of this is written to suggest God’s way leads to financial prosperity or stability. It does, however, show us
God’s order is best because it is God’s order.
