Genesis 39 – Sexual Harassment

SEXUALLY HARASSED? WHAT YOU CAN’T CONTROL!

No one should be sexually harassed. Potiphar’s wife sexually harassing Joseph serves as a useful template even today. The lesson emphasized is that the innocent are not held responsible for other’s sins against them.

WHAT CAN’T WE CONTROL?

  1. HOW GOOD LOOKING WE ARE

Genesis 39:6 (CSB) Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.

Some are born better looking. It’s in their genes. That’s no excuse for the bad behavior of others.

  1. HOW OTHERS LOOK AT US

39:7 (CSB) After some time his master’s wife looked longingly at Joseph

Even if we covered every inch of our bodies, devious minds could imagine as much as the deviant lustful mind wants to invent to consume. How abusers look at us is not our fault.

  1. WHAT OTHERS SAY TO US

39:7 (CSB) “Sleep with me.”

When someone says the inappropriate, don’t let them blame you. Like false evidence planted, their guilty conscience is looking to escape responsibility for their deviance. You are not responsible for their words.

  1. OTHER’S PERSISTENCE TOWARDS US

General 39:10 (CSB) Although she spoke to Joseph day after day….

Unless a swift kick in the groin becomes inevitable, some men are persistent jerks. Evil people will continue to be evil despite everything done right to thwart it. Their behavior is not your responsibility.

  1. EVERY ENVIRONMENT WE MIGHT ENCOUNTER

Genesis 39:11 (CSB) Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.

Too many innocents get blamed for being in the “wrong place at the wrong time”, when just doing their job, minding their business, or even walking. Again, they are to blame, not you.

  1. WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT US

Genesis 39:17-18 (CSB) 17) Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me, 18) “but when I screamed for help, he left his garment beside me and ran outside.”

Joseph had no control over her lying to the other servants and her husband; even when afterwards punished (something else out of his control).

Impurity in others? It’s not your fault. We can’t control when others are lacking self-control.
