Genesis 37-50 – The Temptations of Dysfunctional Families #12

Being violated, whether sexually, physically, emotionally or verbally can lead to the temptation of repeating the cycle within your own family. Joseph had two sons. We do not know much about them, but when it is time for them to be blessed by their grandfather before he dies, Joseph follows tradition, firstborn first. When Jacob switches by crossing his hands, Joseph tries to intervene (Gen 48.13-20). If this tells us anything, it is that Joseph played by the rules of the birthright, and did not play favorites with his children. Joseph breaks the cycle of favoritism that had plagued his family for generations. In saving himself, Joseph hopefully saved his sons. To be the first is to not be the last.
