Genesis 3 – The Curses and Creation

In reading the Genesis of man and woman being created out of dust and a rib, it is easy for the scholarly and skeptics to take the details metaphorically. While metaphors are not literal, literal details can have metaphor-like meanings. Genesis 2 shows Adam was given the charge to cultivate and protect the garden. Eve was given the charge to be his helper.
Let’s hop ahead to Genesis 3 and the curses. People have pondered why the curses had nothing to do with the sins of Adam and Eve. Did you notice I said “sins”? The curses didn’t have anything to do with eating the forbidden fruit, but that wasn’t the only sin.
When the curse of increased pain in childbirth was given, this is connected to her abandoning her helper role which included childbirth; and instead choosing to lead Adam. Can you see how childbirth is connected to how she was made? If not, see 1 Corinthians 11. Both bring life out from the body.
When Adam had the ground cursed due to his sin, this is connected to his not protecting his charge which included the garden (and Eve). It also included his life support of Eve through cultivating and protecting the garden. They couldn’t live if they couldn’t eat.
Do you see God’s point in the curses? They are not tied to the sin of eating by Adam and Eve. They are connected to the creation purposes of Adam and Eve and to life. Why? Sin brings death. And all sin ultimately is a cancelation of our created purpose. To remind us, God took the curses back to their created purposes. That is how their literal creation, dust and a rib, is also very meaningful. The curses are connected to Adam as protector, Eve as helper, and life created by God.
