Genesis 1 – Not “Then God Thought”

The Genesis 1 text reads, “In the beginining'” followed by “Then God said.” Not, “Then God thought;” although God’s thoughts are powerful enough to create. Not, “Then God made;” although the account is a record of God’s works. But “Then God said;” because Genesis 1 is setting the standard for the rest of all time and the rest of all people. Genesis was written by Moses to tell Israel about their God. This God is sovereign over the entire universe, and is about to speak again, to them for the first time, at Mt. Sinai. The entire mountain smoked and shook (Ex 19). Then God speaks and gives the Law. What is Israel’s proper response? Reading Genesis 1 we can see the proper response of all when God speaks: “And it was so” (Gen.1:9). Speech leads to works. In that same beginning was also The Word (Jn.1:1). We could call Jesus the Speech of God. Are we willing to obey Jesus today as all of existence did in Genesis 1 and make it so?
