Exodus 32 – A Slam Dunk Service

In my younger days, you should have seen me dunk! I soared, did one-handed and two-handed dunks, 360’s, and others. I was amazing on that 8 foot goal!
What? The goal is supposed to be 10 foot high? But then I couldn’t dunk! But then I couldn’t be amazing! Standards. Objective truths. They ruin everything!
Picture in your mind how successful the “worship service” in Exodus 32 was:
[ ] The collection was generously given (vv.2-3).
[ ] The worship was in remembrance of God who rescued them (v.4).
[ ] They gathered in God’s name (v.5).
[ ] People willingly got up early to attend (v.6).
[ ] Again, people offered sacrificially (v.6).
[ ] Participation was eagerly attended (v.6).
[ ] There was eating, drinking, and playing (v.6).
Now compared to many church services today, they both would be measured as successful. Except God did not approve. The Israelites had lowered the standard down to what they wanted, a service at which they could happily succeed and enjoy. They, in effect, had a slam-dunk worship. Except to God it was not amazing; they too came up short.
