Exodus 2:3,10 – The Salvation of Moses
Just a couple of notes on the birth of Moses.
Exodus 2:3 HCSB But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with asphalt and pitch. She placed the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.
The word for “basket” (têbâh) is used in only one other OT narrative where there it is the “ark.” So both Noah and Moses were saved from water by the same têbâh.
Speaking of water, let’s look at Moses’ name. Most versions say something to the effect:
Exodus 2:10 HCSB When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
Moses is an Egyptian name (i.e., Thutmose, Ramose). The name Moses has a double meaning. It not only sounds like the Hebrew word for “drawing out” but it also sounds like and means in Egyptian, “born of.” So for the Hebrew meaning, Moses was drawn out of the water. And for the Egyptian meaning, Moses was born of water.
Both of these ideas sure sound familiar.
