Romans 9:14 – May It Never Be

If an imperfect mind cannot explain the contradictions within the actions of those with likewise imperfect minds, what makes the imperfect mind think he can explain the pure actions of the perfect mind of God? The answer is that our imperfect minds cannot see the limitations of our own imperfect thinking. Too often we substitute God’s perfect thinking with our own imperfect conclusions. That’s why Paul had to keep saying, “May it never be”  (Romans 3:4; 3:6; 3:31; 6:2; 6:15; 7:7; 7:13; 9:14; 11:1; 11:11).

What makes our limited minds so arrogant that we think we can explain the limitedness of God? We can’t. What we must limit ourselves to is what we know about God as He reveals Himself, not as we reveal Him within our own imperfections. For example, “What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!” (Romans 9:14). Whatever our explanation of Romans 9-11; whatever our explanations of questions wherein God has not revealed specific answers; whatever our explanations of troubling issues, there is one thing we know. God is not unjust. Whatever He does is right.
