Numbers 14:9 – Why Things Happen both Good and Bad

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do good things happen to bad people? “Free will” is one very good answer; but that is an answer which has God backing away, necessarily, in order for free will to exist. God is not Deistic, because He is both immanent and transcendent. Free will hinges more on His transcendence.
Another answer, that shows God is immanent and involved, can be found in a powerful but possibly overlooked verse and reason. This has to do with Israel being afraid to conquer Canaan and Caleb’s courage and faith: “Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us” (Numbers 14:9).
As God provides rain for the righteous and unrighteous (Matthew 5:45), God provides a level of protection for everyone; or else untold evils would come upon all because of our free will and all are sinners (and some forgiven) and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).
We pray for God to intervene, He did on the cross, and He does in every day life; and sometimes that means that finally, justice comes and bad things will happen to bad people because God is good.
