Matthew 6:10 – Can We Pray “Your Kingdom Come?

“Epiphanies” should be redefined as, “Well, duh!” I felt this way contemplating the Lord’s Prayer, specifically, “Your Kingdom come.” Too often interpretations are based upon fighting against false doctrines, or cross referencing topics from one book to another. We leave the text to prove a point. Consequently too many today think “Your Kingdom come” cannot be prayed because it came on the Day of Pentecost. But is that the meaning in Matthew 6:10? No, this is not the Kingdom coming with Jesus sitting on the throne of David. This is the Kingdom coming to an individual so that they will live the Beatitudes: “The poor in spirit are blessed for the kingdom of heaven IS theirs” (5:3). This is the call to “be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). This is the will of God being done “on earth as it is in heaven” (6:10). This is praying that the kingdom of God come to me and others needing God.
