Matthew 5-3-12 – Happiness Depends Upon Me

Happiness depends upon me. That just seems scripturally wrong, even flagrantly arrogant. But just as everything Jesus said within the Sermon on the Mount must be taken with His context, this must too. This point is only true if the first point is true, that happiness comes from God. Listen carefully to the contextual answer. I am not denying that God is involved; I am affirming that happiness comes from me and God; and not me depending upon others to make me happy. In the Beatitudes, with God’s grace, I am the one doing and being throughout. I am the one who is poor in spirit, mourning, gentle, hungry spiritually, merciful, pure in heart, and making peace. I do not need someone else to be merciful in order for me to show mercy. Neither do I need someone to be gentle towards me, for me to be gentle towards them. Happiness depends on me because God has been gentle and merciful to me already. And when you have God’s grace, you don’t need mercy, gentleness, and peace from others for you to be happy. Take ownership of your own happiness, just you and God.
