Matthew 1:23 – That’s Not How Babies Are Made

Anyone who knows “the birds and the bees” knows a stork doesn’t bring babies. That’s not how babies are born. Such “common sense” explains why skeptics, and even some claiming to be Christians, have problems accepting the virgin birth of Jesus. Martin Luther King Jr, whom I respect as a Civil Rights leader, didn’t believe in it. He wrote, “the evidence for the tenability of this doctrine is to (sic.) shallow to convince any objective thinker”.

Matthew claims it to be true in Matthew 1:23. Why should anyone believe it? If you grant the possibility of the supernatural, that God exists, then no one should be surprised the virgin birth is possible. Consider these “birth” stories:

  • God made Eve from Adam’s rib.
  • God made Adam from the dust and dirt.

These “birth” stories prepare the reader for the virgin birth! I’m astonished at people claiming to believe in the God of the Bible, and yet don’t believe the God of the Bible. Here is a saying that explains the virgin birth and every other miracle in the Bible, one I often say: “If you can believe the first four words of the Bible, then you can believe all the words that follow – in the beginning God.” That includes the virgin birth.
