Matthew 1:1 – History and Hope

Matthew begins in a most boring way:
“An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:” (CSB’17 Matthew 1:1) followed by mind-numbing names.
Boring if you are not a Jew. Hidden to Gentiles in plain sight are:
• 4 of the most important promises made.
• 3 promises made to one man.
• 2 of the most significant people.
• 2 of the promises are about the same person.
• 1 promise made to the other man.
To Abraham was made 3 promises: nation, land, seed (Genesis 12). Through that seed the world would be blessed. Ultimately that seed would be Jesus.
To David was made the house or son promise (2 Samuel 7). Ultimately that son would be Jesus.
Within that first verse is the history and hope of all Israel and mankind. Matthew begins with an account of the greatest story that’s been waiting to be told.
