Mark 16:17-18 – Back to Creation

“Wonders from the Word” is about little bits of wonderment found within Scriptures. Treasures that are wonderful or questions that make us wonder in amazement. Sometimes I wonder, and I just wonder, if what I am seeing is really there, just a coincidence, or purposely placed to make a point.

For example, the fall of man, of Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden is the beginning and end. It is the beginning of man’s history, and the end of his innocence. The gospel brings us back to the beginning, back to an innocence where we can walk with God as Adam and Eve did before their sin. Having seen that the gospel brings us back to the beginning, I wonder….

In the beginning was creation, and in the beginning of the gospel it was to be preached to all creation. The gospel reverses the effects of the fall. Therefore, do you wonder if there is any connection between what abilities or blessings that are mentioned in Mark 16:17-18 with the book of Genesis?

  • Drive out demons – Satan in the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of because of the Head Demon.
  • Speak in new languages – The Tower of Babel is reversed on the Day of Pentecost. But maybe even more striking is that as the serpent used God-given speech to lead away, God will give miraculous speech to lead people back.
  • Pick up snakes without harm – Striking or bruising the head of the snake is the curse given to the snake, to Satan. Picking up poisonous snakes shows they have been made harmless.
  • Drink anything deadly without harm – Eating the fruit which was deadly caused harm spiritually, and when the tree was taken away, it caused harm physically.
  • Lay hands on the sick to make them well – Back in the garden God made man perfect. His actions will lead to sickness both of the soul and body.

The point of this is that we should search the scriptures in wonderment and awe. We might discover more questions than answers, but all along the way we are wondering what God is revealing in His word.
