Luke 8:1-3 – A Gem on the Role of Women

Jesus came as a man, and chose 12 men to be His apostles, but the help of women supported their success. Luke, who emphasizes the raised role of women, stresses the teaching ministry of Jesus through a double emphasis that He was “preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God.” Along with Him and the Twelve were three named women, Mary Magadalene, Joanna, Susanna, and “many others.” What were these women doing? They “were supporting them from their possessions” (Lk 8.3). Jesus relied on the monetary support of women in His preaching. Many preachers today have experienced the same blessing from their wives. There is as much glory in standing behind the gospel, as there is in standing in front.
