No One Got Up To Replace Jesus

When no one got up to wash one another’s feet, and Jesus got up to wash the disciples feet, no one got up to stop or replace him. Yes, Peter objected to Jesus washing his feet. But Peter didn’t offer to wash Jesus’ feet…still. No one offered to wash their friends’ feet…still. They would rather object to Jesus’ good example than to follow it…still. As someone said, combining Luke’s (arguing who is the greatest) and John’s (no one washing feet) narratives, “Everyone fought over the throne. No one fought over the towel.”
When Jesus got up and no one stopped him. Was it shock? Was it stubbornness? Put yourself there. Let’s count the times people could have stopped and replaced Jesus:
1. “So he got up from supper,” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
2. “laid aside his outer clothing,” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
3. “took a towel,” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
4. “and tied it around himself.” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
5. “Next, he poured water into a basin” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
6. “and began to wash his disciples’ feet” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
7. “and to dry them with the towel tied around him.” (no one got up to replace Jesus)
8. “He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”” (CSB’17 John 13:4-6) (no one got up to replace Jesus)
That’s 8 chances, but wait! Peter was not the first apostle whisevfeet Jesus washed. If he was the last, then that is 19 chances!. That’s 19 times no one got up to replace Jesus and serve. How many times are we not serving? Did Jesus ever get His feet washed?
We can’t replace Jesus on the cross, but today we are the hands and feet of Jesus. Let’s get our feet and hands serving and being Jesus.
