Praying 1 Thessalonians 1:1 – Cultural Unity

“Yo. Sup. What up. Hey. Hello. How are you. Grace. Peace.”
Our society is so divided that “cultural appropriation” is considered a cardinal sin, theft even, and racist. A different approach to cultural appropriation is seen in the many introductions of Paul in his epistles. This includes 1 Thessalonians 1:1. Greeting someone by saying “Grace” was part of Gentile culture. Wishing someone “Peace” was very Jewish, seen even today when they say “shalom.” So, when Paul says, “Grace to you and peace”, that should not be overlooked, but should be powerful. Think of it this way, when Paul said it, Jewish Christians were wished “Grace” (and “Peace”); and Gentile Christians were greeted with “Peace” (and “Grace”). When combined, these two races were one new race in Christ.
Praying 1 Thessalonians 1:1 – Cultural Unity
Dear God incarnate, You left heaven to assimilate with a certain people within time to bring grace and peace, and yet did not allow yourself to be bound by cultural restrictions. This is seen in your treatment of the marginalized. This included those not originally part of your covenant and those excluded without outreach. May we become one people, sharing your openness, welcoming people culturally, sharing our cultures, and becoming a new spiritual cultural in You. May we never confuse man’s culture with your truth. We thank you for your grace and peace which change us into a new people. Amen.
