A Praying Commentary – 1 Thessalonians 5:9 – I’m Not In Trouble with God

A Prayer Commentary – I’m Not In Trouble with God (1 Thessalonians 5:9)
TEXT: “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,” (CSB’17 1 Thessalonians 5:9)

DEVOTIONAL: There’s something wrong with parents who enjoy punishing their children to make their life easier. More broadly, some people just enjoy being in a bad mood! Bad attitudes about bad attitudes abound. You’ve been there. We all have. That person is just waiting, hoping you will mess up. “I told you so!” Or, “You’re such an idiot!” spews out of their mouth. It’s as if they enjoy being angry.
And there’s something wrong with parents who never punish, likewise thinking it makes their life less complicated. They mistake this as love for either their child or themselves. In other relationships, this is avoiding confrontations. It doesn’t work in the long run to bring peace.
Punishment is sometimes needed, but when not necessary, there is joy. Our text is about the lack of discipline being appropriate. I remember being told, “Wait until your father gets home”. Using the language of the text, I was “destined” or “appointed” for punishment. God wants you to not be appointed to wrath.
Help God the Father by accepting salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER: God, You are love. But love requires punishment when love is violated, or loved ones are hurt. You take pleasure in showing love, in seeking my best and the best of others. May I seek Your best by not forcing You to become angry with me. Thank You for my appointment to spend eternity in Your presence. Through my Savior, Amen.
