1 Peter 2:11 – Why Are We Foreigners?

Consider this: Why we are strangers, sojourners, exiles, foreigners, and citizens of another realm (1 Pet.2:11).
It is not just because we are different from this world in our allegiance and morals. It is because that is what Jesus was when incarnated; and we are like Him. And He was different from this world in allegiance and morals. Aren’t those the same in the end? Maybe, the the jou6there makes the difference.
1. Our goal should not be to be different from the world, but to be like Jesus who was different from the world. Sameness is our goal.
2. Jesus left Heaven so we could leave this world even while living in it. We already have left the world behind by being new creation and adopting counter-culture morals. This world is not our home.
3. As another example, when reading the OT, how many books are about Israel possessing the Promise Land; versus how many are about Israel as either waiting to posses or as exiles? Jesus was reliving the “son of God” as the Son of God, but this time without wanting to be like the nations around them.
God’s people are wanderers. Blessed are the gentle for they will inherit the earth. And blessed are the foreigners, those who are outcasts, left behind, and unwanted; for Jesus became all that for you.
