1 Peter 3:7 – Honoring Our Wives

While Jesus walked this earth, His Father declared, “This is My Beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased.” Husbands honor their wives by: 1) publically praising them; 2) and showing allegiance as the Father did to His Son.
Ever hear a husband talk down to or about his wife in public? Ever see him flirt with other women or even ignore his wife? In such he dishonors her.
“In domestic relationships, then, God has appointed an order that includes the husband as the head and the wife as being honored, though in a position of subordination.” (Charles Ryrie) I like his emphasis on “honored.”
In 1 Cor.11, Paul uses Christ’s voluntary submission to his Father to illustrate. This can serve as a model of different ones having the same worth but different work. Jesus is in submission to His Father. The comparison goes on establishing that, as the Father is the head of Christ, Christ is the head of the church, and husband is head of the wife. This is same worth but different work or roles. Consider the honor of wives comparable to the Father showing honor to Jesus; and as Jesus does to His bride the church.
Submission is not a place of dishonor. So husbands let’s make sure our wives see and hear us treat them for what they are – special before God and to us.
1 Peter 3:7: “Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker partner, showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.” (CSB)
