Living Our Singing

Living Our Singing
Are we living what we are singing? Are we singing what we are living? Is there a discord (pun intended) between life and song?
I got to thinking about this recently when remembering the first line in A Beautiful Life – “Each day I’ll do, a golden deed….” A golden deed can be rephrased as, “the golden rule” in action. That line continues, “by helping those who are in need.” Sounds like a song the “Good Samaritan” could have been singing on that Jericho road.
Life does not always imitate art. “Somedays I’ll do a golden deed by helping those I think deserve need”. That’s more like life, but not an uplifting song lyric. Our life isn’t as holy as our singing, not that we should lower the standard.
Poetic license can be an excuse for bad theology in songs, and can set unrealistic ideals in every day life. My point is not that we should skip songs that challenge us; but rather that we should challenge ourselves not to skip from practicing what we preach in song. Mean what we sing. Sing what we mean. Live the lyrics that we love. Make our lives beautiful music.
“Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.” (CSB’17 Hebrews 13:15-16)
