Ephesians 5:28 – One Body

Ephesians 5:28 (NASB) “So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;”
I’ve often joked about how men show they love their own body by what they eat…I am actually enjoying cheesecake right now. I love my body! But I think Paul is going for something deeper!
Reading the passage in Ephesians we see two historical events: Crucifixion (5:25) and Creation (5:31).
In the crucifixion the body that Jesus loves and cherishes is not his physical body. That temporary encasement he willingly sacrificed for his eternal body, the church. Husbands must be willing to follow his example.
In the creation we remember how God built (Genesis 2:22; literal meaning in Hebrew) woman from Adam’s physical body. This caused him to say, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:23).
Put all together, a man should love his wife as he loves his own body because Jesus through the crucifixion, God through original creation, and marriage itself shows it truly is a divinely designed one flesh relationship. Now back to my cheesecake.
